Born at home in Denton on July 25, 1927, Mr. Greenly was the son of the late Margaret Elizabeth Porter Greenly and Alan Gray Greenly. He attended Caroline High School in Denton where he played baseball, basketball, soccer, and the saxophone, graduating in 1944. After serving in the Army from 1945 until 1946, he attended Washington College in Chestertown on a $500 Senatorial Scholarship and the GI Bill where he was president of the Inter fraternity Council with Theta Chi Fraternity and played soccer and baseball, graduating in 1950.
After college, he went to work for General Motors in Salisbury MD where he spent eight years, after which he became a GMAC auditor in Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Venezuela, and all the ports of Europe. When he returned to the States, he was one of the top Auditors for GMAC, traveling wherever the company needed him, solving problems as a nomad for many years, retiring in October of 1990.
After retirement, he was an exemplary son for his mother who passed away December 15, 2002. After several years of preparation, he started and funded the Greenly Scholarship for North Caroline High School students. Beginning with the 2000-2001 college year, the scholarship has made a college education possible at the school of their choice for many students and will continue to do so for many years to come. He also established a fund at Washington College to provide assistance to Caroline County residents attending his alma mater.
